American Sign Language Courses

American Sign Language I

Grade Level: 9-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: $15/semester

Prerequisite: None

This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). This course is designed for students with no or minimal sign language skills to develop basic skills in use of ASL and knowledge of Deaf culture. Emphasis is upon acquisition of comprehension, production and interactional skills using basic grammatical features. ASL will be taught within contexts and related to general surroundings and everyday life experiences.

American Sign Language II

Grade Level: 9-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: $15/semester

Prerequisite: ASL I

HEAR, NCAA

This course is designed to continue development of American Sign Language (ASL) skills with primary focus on refining the use of basic ASL sentence types. Pronominalization, classifiers, spatial referencing, pluralization, and temporal and distributional aspects are introduced. Students will learn routine communicative functions of the language: asking, requesting, providing clarification, giving and asking for directions. Information about the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture will be included.

American Sign Language III

Grade Level: 9-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: $15/semester

Prerequisite: ASL II

HEAR, NCAA

This course builds on the foundation of skills and knowledge learned in American Sign Language II (ASL II), with emphasis on expansion and refinement of comprehension, production, and interactional skills as covered in ASL II. In addition to expanding their vocabulary, students will learn more complex grammatical features through narratives and dialogues.
