Physical Education Courses

Health

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: None

Health and Wellness is a one semester required course which meets graduation requirements and state guidelines regarding personal and public health and safety. It is designed to introduce you to the knowledge, skills and behaviors to assist you in becoming “health literate” individuals with a lifelong commitment to healthy living and decision making. The topics covered in this course include, but are not limited to, Wellness, Self-Esteem, Nutrition, Disease and Disorder, Drug Awareness, Addiction and Prevention and Human Sexuality and Relationships.

Introduction to Physical Education

Grade Level: 9

Length: Semester

Class Fee: None

Prerequisite: None

This course includes physical fitness testing, team sports, and recreational sports.  It introduces students to game rules and strategies. Students will participate in daily flexibility, cardiovascular, and strength building activities. Student grades are a reflection of dressing out, participation, and test scores.

Team Sports

Grade Level: 10-12

Length: Semester

Class Fee: None

Prerequisite: None

This course designed for students who are interested in competitive sports like basketball, flag football, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, etc.

Weight Training

Grade Level: 9-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: None

Prerequisite: Must have passed Intro to PE, Team Sports, participated in summer weight or be an incoming/current Vista Ridge athlete

This course is set up to focus on the development of physical performance. Students will enhance their knowledge and physical skills to improve on functional strength, power, linear/lateral speed, agility, and quickness. With a strong emphasis on work ethic, safety, balance and cooperation, students will use free weights, Olympic lifts, plyometrics, agility drills and stabilization training to produce positive outcomes in dynamic physical tests.

Advanced Weight Training

Grade Level: 11-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: None

Prerequisite: Weight Training

This course is designed for students and athletes to gain strength, explosiveness, agility, quickness, and speed. Students will build upon their weightlifting techniques and will participate in activities to improve balance, agility, speed, and flexibility as well as strength. This class is tailored toward improving athletic performance. Students will also learn different periodization models, speed, and agility, and basics in sports nutrition.
