Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Courses

AFJROTC 1

Grade Level: 9-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: $40 (includes a T-shirt and uniform accessories)

Prerequisite: None

This is the introductory course for all new cadets. 

  • Aerospace Science I - A Journey Into Aviation History explores the development of flight throughout the centuries.  The emphasis is on The Pioneers of Flight, The Early Air Force, and Space.  

  • Leadership Education I - introduces students to the structure and requirements of the AFJROTC program.  It instills elements of good citizenship, develops informed citizens, strengthens and develops character, develops study habits and time management, and includes the wearing of the Air Force uniform and Air Force customs and courtesies.  Additionally, cadets will be taught the fundamentals of Drill and Ceremonies.

  • Health and Wellness (the Cadet Wellness Program) is an exercise program focused on individual improvement.  The goal is to motivate AFJROTC cadets to lead active, healthy lifestyles with habits that extend into their adult lives.

AFJROTC 2

Grade Level: 10-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: $25

Prerequisite: AFJROTC I and Instructor approval

  • Aerospace Science II - The Science of Flight: A Gateway to New Horizons.  Students learn the fundamentals of flight and are exposed to weather and its effects on flight, human physiology of flight, basic aeronautics and navigation.  

  • Leadership Education II - addresses communication, personal awareness, group dynamics, and problem-solving.  It will emphasize leadership, character development, and good citizenship.  Drill (marching) is continued in this portion.

  • Health and Wellness continues to build on skills learned in AFJROTC 1.

AFJROTC 3

Grade Level: 10-12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: $25

Prerequisite: AFJROTC I and Instructor approval

  • Aerospace Science III - Exploring Space: the High Frontier.  This is a science course which includes the latest information available in space science and space exploration.  The course begins with the study of the space environment from the earliest days of interest in astronomy and early ideas of the heavens, through the Renaissance, and on into modern astronomy.  It provides an in-depth study of the Earth, Sun, stars, moon, and solar system, including terrestrial and the outer planets.  It discusses issues critical to travel in the upper atmosphere such as orbits and trajectories, unmanned satellites, and space probes.

  • Leadership Education III - Life Skills and Career Opportunities.  This course will help students in their decision process for choosing a path to take after high school.  Information on how to apply for admission to college or to a vocational or technical school is included. Information on how to begin the job search is available to students who decide not to go to college or vocational school.  Students also learn about financial planning and how to save, invest, and spend money wisely, and how to manage credit.  Students study real-life issues such as understanding contracts, leases, warranties, legal notices and personal bills.

  • Health and Wellness continues to build on skills learned in AFJROTC 2.

AFJROTC 4

Grade Level: 12

Length: YEAR

Class Fee: $25

Prerequisite: AFJROTC I and Instructor approval

  • Aerospace Science IV - Management of the Corps

  • Leadership Education IV - builds upon the knowledge, skills, and abilities obtained in previous courses.  Students study leadership and management principles and then apply skills by leading the entire corps in a laboratory setting supervised by instructors.  The laboratory manual contains experiments designed to help students apply concepts and principles discussed in previous AFJROTC courses.

  • Health and Wellness includes personal improvement and wellness planning, and culminates with the planning and execution of the President's Physical Fitness competition.
